Pride in the Tempest, 2022

William, a true son of Southern Africa, has traversed the picturesque countries of the region, finally settling along the verdant garden route of South Africa. Born in Zimbabwe to Malawian parents, he spent his formative years in Zimbabwe and Botswana before returning to Malawi after the passing of his father. 

William demonstrated an inclination for the arts from an early age, as his teachers constantly called upon him to create maps and diagrams with a pencil. It wasn't until he stumbled upon a curio market in Malawi that he realized the potential of his talent. He approached a trader and presented a sketch, which was met with instant amazement, leading to an apprenticeship under one of Malawi's most respected artists, Nyangu Chodola.

Through Chodola's mentorship, William was exposed to different mediums and techniques, as well as the business side of the art world. He was also introduced to organizations and galleries, which helped him establish a name for himself in the Malawian art scene. 

In 2015, Mwale held his first solo exhibition at La Galleria in Lilongwe, Malawi, where 25 of his paintings sold out on the opening night. From 2014 to 2017, he exhibited at the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi Arts Festival, winning the award for best portrait artist in Malawi in 2017. In 2018, he received the La Galleria award for best portrait artist in Malawi.
